Philadelphia, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end with a 1-0 overtime loss at No. 11 Drexel on Wednesday night.
The Lafayette defense stood up to the Drexel offense throughout the entire game. Six different Leopards had shots on goal but Dragon's goalkeeper, Jenna Phillips, was able to stop them all.
The Dragons appeared to have the first score of the game late in the first half when Susan Ciufo lifted a shot on a penalty corner that seemed destined for the back of the cage. Goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen made a spectacular diving stop to her right and behind her as she used her stick-side blocker to deflect the ball out of midair and wide of the cage.
The teams combined for 18 shots, 10 of which came from Lafayette (11-4). Lafayette had three shots in the first half and fell to only one in the second, while Drexel had two in the first and three in the second. Senior Kelly Hilovsky, classmate Amanda Saber and sophomore Carolyn Cabrey all had two shots during the game.
Once overtime began it became a shooting frenzy for the Leopards. They shot six different times to try and end the game, five that were saved and one that went wide. Finally in the 84th minute Drexel's Christina Mastropaolo passed into the circle and scored the lone goal.
Lafayette will continue with league play when they host American in their final home game of the regular season at noon on Saturday.
