EASTON, Pa. - The Leopards were on the wrong side of history on Saturday when they were no hit by Le Moyne in the second of two losses on the afternoon. Lafayette lost the first game of the doubleheader, 7-5, before failing to register a hit in a 3-0 shutout in game two.
Le Moyne (20-20) starter Cory Nelson tossed seven hitless innings against the Leopards, walking only three batters while striking out seven. Daniel Bierce, Jeff Butler and Brad Weiss were the lone Lafayette players to reach base, all on walks. Leopard starter Corey Shea had a solid outing, allowing three runs in six innings of work, but it was no match for Nelson's performance.
The Dolphins scored solo runs in the third, fourth and six innings. The third inning run came on a sac fly, and in the fourth, Matt Marra scored on a wild pitch. Chris Haynes accounted for the third and final run with a sixth-inning solo shot over the left centerfield fence.
In game one, starter Zach Fritz lasted only 4.1 innings after giving up five runs, four of which were earned. Bierce had three hits for three RBI and A.J. Miller went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Lafayette (21-25) opened the game by scoring a run in the top of the first. A.J. Pisarri knocked a one-out double down the right field line and scored on a fielding error by pitcher Jeff Tardiff.
It remained a 1-0 game until the fourth when the Dolphins scored two runs to take a one-run lead. Both runs came via Rich Brown's two-run shot to right center.
Miller responded with a leadoff homer the very next inning to briefly tie the game at two.
Le Moyne quickly regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Marra's double scored one of those runs and he eventually scored on a double play ball. A sac bunt led to the inning's third run to make it a 5-2 ball game.
The Dolphins added runs in the sixth and eighth innings, upping their lead to five (7-2) heading into the final inning.
Lafayette made it a ball game in the ninth, however, with three runs to bring the team within one of the lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Pisarri walked to send home the first run and Bierce's single to left field led to two more runs. Butler popped up to third base, however, for the game's final out.
The Leopards and Dolphins wrap up their series tomorrow with a game at 1 p.m.
Postgame Notes:
- This series marks the first time these teams have faced each other.
- Daniel Bierce now has 67 hits this season, fourth-most in Lafayette single season history. He also now has 18 doubles this spring, the most in a single season.
- Bierce's steal of second in game two marks his 21st stolen base of the season. He has now stolen 28 straight bases, dating back to April 12 of last season, the seventh-longest such streak in the nation.
- Jeff Butler has now played in 163 career games, sixth all-time in Lafayette history.
