Easton, Pa. - Lafayette took down No. 21 Penn State in overtime Wednesday night. The win, which improves Lafayette's record to 4-1, came following a sudden death overtime goal made by freshman midfielder, Deanna DiCroce.
The Leopard defense held the Nittany Lions the entire first half, allowing only one shot that went wide. Lafayette took three shots on goal; two of the shots were taken by forward Kelly Hilovsky and the other by forward Amanda Saber.
In the second half, both teams took seven shots and had four saves each. Lafayette was able to keep Penn State scoreless. Penn State took three penalty corners while Lafayette took two, neither team able to execute a goal.
With the start of overtime the Leopards were able to break away with a run by freshman, Deanna DiCroce, who was able to get on the inside to shoot between the goalkeeper, Ali Meves' legs to give the Leopard's a 1-0 victory.
"This was a really important win for us tonight. Taking down a top ranked team shows us, and everyone else, that we are ready to battle with the big guys" said DiCroce.
"The team today played on a whole different level than before," head coach Andrew Griffiths said after the overtime win. "This win really shows how good this Lafayette team is. Everyone is improving and feeling great all around."
The Leopards will take on the west coast Pacific Tigers, tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
