FARMVILLE, Va. - One-goal games certainly don't seem to intimidate the Lafayette field hockey squad as the Leopards came away with a 1-0 victory over Radford on Sunday afternoon. The win, which improves Lafayette's record to 2-0, came following a 3-2 strokeoff victory against Longwood on Friday.
Senior defender Meghan Cloonan's first-ever collegiate goal provided the only offense the Leopards needed. Lafayette (2-0-0) had 12 shots in the game while the Highlanders (1-2) had 11, but the Leopard defense made sure that one goal was enough. Goalie Kelsey Andersen played a part in that defensive effort as she made three stops on the afternoon.
With roughly 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Lindsay Majno's pass found Cloonan who redirected the shot and put it past Radford goalie Jennifer Wisniewski for the 1-0 Lafayette lead. Andersen made a key stop with less than a minute to play on a shot by Marlee Schramm to keep her squad up 1-0 at the half.
Radford out-shot the Leopards 6-3 in the second period but only one of those shots forced Andersen to make a save. Caitlin Titus had the game's final look at the goal with a shot that went high at the 65-minute mark but it made no difference as the 1-0 score stood as the final.
Lafayette has a few days to rest up before traveling to Temple on Friday for a 4 p.m. contest.
