NEW YORK, N.Y. - Lafayette took on Ivy League foe Columbia on Wednesday night in a game that came down to the season's first stroke-off. The Leopards fell in the end as they could not convert their stroke-offs, and fell 2-1(SO) in New York City.
Columbia (9-4) was able to get on the board first as Julia Garrison made a goal with one minute remaining in the first and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead going into half time.
Lafayette (5-8) answered back three minutes into the second half off one of the Leopards 11 penalty corner as senior Meghan Cicchi got the ball past the keeper on a Deanna DiCroce and Emily Valeo assist to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams went through two scoreless 15 minute overtimes to bring the Leopards to their first stroke-off of the season. Lafayette was outshot 3-2, with Valeo and Carolyn Cabrey making the Lafayette shots.
The Leopards were able to get 16 shots off during the 100 minutes of play while the Lions had 14 shots. Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen made nine saves and Columbia's Christie O'Hara made 10 saves.
The Leopards head to Worcester, Mass. to take on Patriot League opponent Holy Cross on Saturday at noon. Lafayette can clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth with a win over Holy Cross.
