EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team was able to get off two goals early in the second half but they were no match to No. 16 Drexel, as the Dragons scored with four seconds left on the clock gave them the 3-2 win on Tuesday night at Rappolt Field.
The opening half was slow with Drexel (12-3) firing off 5 shots and holding the Leopards to a single shot in the 35 minutes to send both teams in a scoreless halftime.
Lafayette (6-8) scored the first goal of the game four minutes into the second half. Freshman Haley Keenan fed the ball to senior captain Cara Lyons who scrambled with it in front of the cage and found an empty place and made the goal.
At the 55 minute mark, Carolyn Cabrey sent the ball into the circle to find Keenan who scored her first goal of her young career. The Leopards took a 2-0 lead.
Drexel did not give up and scored its own goal in the 60th minute off a penalty corner by Jen Cairone. The goal gave the Dragons momentum and they scored three minutes later as Susan Cuifo found the back of the cage to tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams gave everything they had for the final five minutes of the game. With the overtime getting closer, Drexel was sent to the corner and off the penalty Kim Tunnell took the shot and got it past Kelsey Andersen for the game-winning goal.
Drexel outshot Lafayette 15-4 while Andersen made seven saves to Drexel's Jenna Phillips single save. The Dragons had seven penalty corners to the Leopards two.
Lafayette returns to Patriot League play on Saturday as the Leopards travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on historic rival Lehigh at 11 a.m.
