Leopards Fall to No. 8 American in PL Final

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lafayette field hockey team traveled to Washington, D.C. to take on No. 8 American for the Patriot League Regular Season Championships on Saturday, the Leopards fell 3-1 to the Eagles and picked up a No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.

Lafayette (8-9, 4-1) came out strong early in the game and earned the day's first penalty corner in the 11th minute. The Leopards were unable to get a shot off, however, signifying a distinct shift in the momentum of the game.

American's (15-3, 5-0) was able to get the first point on the board as Alex McMackin broke through the Leopard defense and found the back of the cage. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead going into the half.

American picked up two more goals in the second half, as McMackin's scored her second goal of the day in the 50th minute. Senior Christine Fingerhuth moved the score to 3-0 moments later, scoring in the 57th minute.

Lafayette got on the board in the 66th minute as senior co-captain Cara Lyons fed the ball to Kristin Heaney who scored in front of the cage.

The Leopards were outshot 14-7 during the game while senior Kelsey Andersen made four saves for Lafayette.

American will face fourth-seeded Colgate on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament. The other first round matchup with pit second-seeded Lafayette against third-seeded Bucknell at 1:45 p.m. The winner of each game will then meet on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. to decide the 2010 Patriot League Champion.
