RICHMOND, Va. - Lafayette could manage only two runs against Richmond, falling 11-2 on Saturday afternoon. The game marked the Leopards' fifth-straight road loss to open the 2010 season.
Lafayette (0-5) was held to just eight hits, with two apiece from Adam McMahon and A.J. Pisarri.
Starter Ethan Perro lasted four innings and gave up four runs, three of which were earned.
The Spiders loaded the bases in their half of the first on a double and two hit by pitches, but Perro was able to work out of the jam by getting Ryan Mallory to fly out to Rob Froio in centerfield.
Richmond scraped together an unearned run in the second after Chris Cowell reached base on an error by third baseman Justin Shepherd and came around to score on another error, this time by second baseman Pisarri.
The Spiders then put up a two-spot off Perro in the third thanks to two singles, a walk and a sac bunt.
Perro gave up another run the next inning. Phil Ruzbarsky singled through the right side to lead off and scored while the Leopards caught Mike Mergenthaler stealing second with no one out, making it 4-0.
Lafayette got back one of those runs the following inning. Alex Bechta led off with a triple, the Leopards' first of the spring, and scored on a fielding error.
Unfortunately Richmond added three runs in the fifth off reliever Michael Massa. The runs came on a Victor Croglio RBI double, Andrew Lowry's RBI single to center and a Ruzbarsky RBI bunt.
The Leopards added another solo run in the sixth. Froio led off with a single and took third on Pisarri's single to right field. Matt Hall grounded into a double play but it allowed Froio to score the team's second run of the afternoon.
Richmond stretched it to a seven-run lead with two additional runs in the sixth. The first was scored on a Mallory RBI groundout that was followed by a solo shot off the bat of Cowell.
The Spiders added two insurance runs in the seventh off reliever Chris Boyce for an 11-2 lead, which remained the final as the Leopards were retired in order in the ninth.
Lafayette and Richmond conclude their three-game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at 1 p.m.
