WEST POINT, N.Y. - On a cool and cloudy day in West Point, the Leopards' offense managed to score only six combined runs in two games and dropped both contests in Sunday's doubleheader against Army.
Lafayette (8-28, 4-12) could not come from behind in either game, dropping the first 7-4 and the second 5-2. Army improved to 23-13 and 13-3 in Patriot League play and is guaranteed a spot in the Patriot League Tournament.
The Leopards were led on offense by senior captain A.J. Pisarri, who went a combined 4-for-7 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Bobby Fargnoli had a two-hit outing in game one, including his second home run in as many days.
Game one starter John Gentile lasted just 2.1 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits before giving way to freshman Michael Massa, who surrendered the final two Army runs in his 1.1 inning of work. Senior Jeremy Atkins tossed 2.1 innings of shutout ball.
The Leopards' offense had nine hits in the game, including two from Pisarri, Fargnoli and Brian Davila but managed to put only four runs on the board.
Army grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on Clint Moore's one-out RBI single to left field but Massa got Shaun Wixted to strike out looking to end the inning and strand two runners.
Lafayette tied at one the net inning on a Davila single to center field that scored Matt Hall, who had reached base on a single and advanced to second on a Black Knights throwing error.
It remained 1-1 until the bottom of the third when Army put together five hits that resulted in a four-run inning. Kevin McKague had the first RBI hit of the inning which was followed by J.T. Watkin's one-out hit that sent home another run. David Darnell knocked home the final two runs on a single to left field before Massa entered the game in relief and got out of the inning without allowing another run.
The Leopards put together a two-run fourth inning that came thanks to a two-run shot off the bat of Fargnoli.
Unfortunately the Black Knights put up a two-spot of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double off the bat of Wixted that made it 7-3.
The Leopards were not ready to end the game and added a run when Pisarri singled down the left field line to score Scott Kelleher, who had reached on a one-out double. Unfortunately that marked the only scoring of the inning and the game ended in the 7-4 final.
Game two saw Lafayette record just five hits, two of which came from Pisarri. Lafayette starter Sean McGrath had a solid outing, going five full innings and giving up only two earned runs but the Leopards' offense failed to provide him with much run support.
The game opened on a promising start as Lafayette jumped out to the 1-0, first-inning lead on Kelleher's RBI single up the middle that scored Matt Fenster, who had reached on a two-out walk.
The Black Knights put together two runs in its half of the first to take the lead and never again trailed. Clint Moore sent drove in both runs on a homer to right field.
It remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth when Pisarri led off the inning with a solo shot, his first homer of the season, to tie the game at two.
Army again countered with a run of its own in the fifth thanks to a fielder's choice RBI on a ball hit by Zach Price.
The Black Knights tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth off reliever Jeff Snell and the Leopards were retired in order in the ninth.
Lafayette returns home on Wednesday to host Long Island at 3:30 p.m.
