BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield scored a pair of runs in the third inning and used a standout pitching performance to deal Lafayette an 8-1 defeat on Thursday.
The Roadrunners reached Lafayette starter Zach Fritz.for a pair of runs in the third inning. Jeremy's Rodriguez's single and Martin Medina's sac fly accounted for the scores and proved to be enough offense for the hosts (14-5) who had Mike McCarthy on the hill.
Medina struck again in the bottom of the fifth, ripping a two-run home run to left center to score Rodriguez and stretch CSUB's lead to 5-0.
Bakersfield added a run in the sixth off reliever Jack Rems and two more in the seventh. Medina was at it again, driving in his fourth run of the game on a sac fly in the seventh.
The Leopards finally reached McCarthy in the eighth. Andrew Santomauro, a defensive substitution in the seventh, led off the frame with a single and moved to third on a throwing error. He later scored on a wild pitch.
McCarthy (2-2) threw eight innings, allowing six hits on nine strikeouts with two walks. The only run of the game he allowed was unearned. Fritz surrendered five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts through five innings. Rems, Derek Gussaroff and Kevin Casey each worked an inning of relief for the Leopards.
Offensively, Matt Fenster was 2-for-2 for the Leopards. On the defensive side of things, Lafayette committed a season-high five errors.
Lafayette and Cal State Bakersfield play the third game of the four-game series on Friday at 5 p.m. ET.
