BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite a solid pitching performance from freshman Melissa Robinson in the opener, the Lafayette softball team dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader with Lehigh, losing 1-0 and 10-0 in Patriot League action.
Tenley Halaquist and Jacqi Kennelly each connected for two-out singles and Carly Potock doubled to score the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
The Leopards had their best scoring chance of the game in the sixth inning. Stacey Kushner led off with a walk, and a single by Stacey Dorn put runners on first and second with no outs. Kristin Garganio lined out to left, Carly Feiro fouled out and Lauren Murphy grounded out to third to end the inning. The Leopards left two runners on in the inning and seven in the game.
Robinson (1-9) allowed just one run on six hits, but took the loss. She fanned three walked three over six innings. Lehigh starter Rebecca Bliss (9-3) struck out one and walked one with five hits in seven innings.
The second-game was a five-inning affair that saw the Mountain Hawks put up four runs in the first inning and pull away for a 10-0 victory in five innings.
All four of Lehigh's runs in the first inning came with two outs. Halaquist drove in two with a single through the right side, and Kennelly (single) and Rosie Roessel (walk) each brought in runs. Lafayette starter Ali Henry (1-6) was chased from the game in the inning, surrendering four runs on one hit with three walks.
Lehigh (19-15, 5-1) put the game away with five runs in the fourth inning. Kennelly and Roessel each had two-run singles and another runner crossed home on a wild pitch.
The Lafayette offense was stifled by Lehigh starter Ashley Quigley (8-8) who allowed just two hits while striking out six. Mary Episcopo accounted for both hits, a single in the first and a lead-off double in the fourth.
The Leopards (2-27, 0-6) host St. Joseph's on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and then finish off the Lehigh series on Wednesday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
