EASTON, Pa. - A total team effort propelled Lafayette to a 2-0 shutout against Vermont on Sunday afternoon at Rappolt Field. The Leopards improve to 3-4 overall with the victory, while the Catamounts drop to 4-3 on the season.
"I'm really happy with our defensive team play, especially considering we have a young group in the back," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "They have come a long way in a short period of time from the start of the season. We have to keep working on our penalty corner efficiency, because that is an area that needs improvement as we head into Patriot League play in a couple of weeks."
Carolyn Cabrey broke the ice for Lafayette 13:30 into the game with a deflection into the top of the cage that beat goalkeeper Stephanie Zygmunt. The goal was set up following a penalty corner when Jenna Seybert passed the ball to the left post where Cabrey was positioned. Cabrey's tally was her third of the season.
The Leopards added another goal before halftime, at 28:51, after Deanna DiCroce collected a loose ball in front of the goal and passed across to Aimee Smith, who deposited the ball in the cage. Smith's marker was her third of the year, giving Lafayette a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Maroon and White controlled the play in the first half, only surrendering one shot in the frame. Mara Kish started the game in goal and did not face any shots in her 35 minutes of action. Lafayette registered 10 shots and 10 corners in the period.
Early in the second half Vermont put some pressure on the Lafayette defense and goalie Jessica Deutsch who replaced Kish in the cage at halftime. Deutsch made three consecutive saves following a Catamounts corner then made another after Vermont's second corner in a two-minute span. The freshman goalkeeper totaled five stops in the game.
The final statistics heavily favored Lafayette, who dominated the game. The Leopards outshot Vermont, 15-6, and earned 19 corners, while surrendering just two.
Zygmunt made 12 saves in the contest for Vermont.
Lafayette returns to action on Sept. 25 when it hosts Albany at 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
