First-Place Army Takes Two from Baseball

April 15, 2012

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. - First-place Army maintained its perfect Patriot League record with a doubleheader sweep of the Lafayette baseball team on Sunday at West Point. The Black Knights took the twin bill by scores of 8-0 and 6-0.

Lafayette now stands at 10-26-1 on the season and 4-8 in the Patriot League. Army moves to 12-0 in the league and 28-9 overall. The Black Knights have already clinched a berth in the Patriot League Tournament.

The story of the first game was Army's senior left-hander Logan Lee. Lee (4-1) retired the first 19 Leopards he faced en route to a seven-inning, one-hit complete game.

Lafayette's Thomas Dunleavy reached on an error with one out in the seventh inning to end the bid for a perfect game, and Kevin Casey followed with a single to break up the no-hitter, but Lee stranded the two baserunners to finish the shutout.

Offensively, the Black Knights posted three runs in the first inning, two each in the second and third and then one to cap the scoring at 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth frame. Zach Price and Harold Earls drove in two runs apiece for Army.

Derek Gussaroff started and took the loss to fall to 4-4. He allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work. Toby Schwartz followed with 2.1 frame of one-run relief, and Ben Meer posted a zero in the bottom of the sixth.

After southpaw starter Connor Ortolf pitched a perfect first inning and stranded two runners in scoring position in the second, the Black Knights got on the board in the nightcap with two-run home run in the third frame by Kevin McKague. Army would score four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to round out the 6-0 final score.

Ortolf (1-1) ceded five earned runs on seven hits and one walk in 3.1 innings of work. The sophomore southpaw struck out two batters.

After Sean McGrath registered one out, Jeff Snell fired 4.1 frames of scoreless relief to keep the Black Knights' bats at bay. However, the Leopards were unable to capitalize as Alex Robinett tossed seven innings of four-hit ball to improve to 3-1.

Casey and Brad Hopek led the Lafayette offense with two hits apiece. Kevin McCarville also singled in the contest, and Matt Lerner drew a walk in his lone plate appearance as a pinch hitter.

The Leopards will play at Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon before resuming the Patriot League slate over the weekend. Lafayette has all eight of its league home games left to play beginning with a four-game set against Navy on April 21 and 22.
