EASTON, Pa. - Kevin Casey's two-run home run was one of just two extra-base hits for the Lafayette baseball team on Saturday afternoon, as defending Patriot League champion Navy swept a doubleheader at Kamine Stadium by scores of 13-3 and 21-3.
The Leopards now stand at 10-29-1 on the season and 4-10 in the Patriot League. The Midshipmen move to 18-23 overall with a 5-9 league mark. The clubs will reconvene on College Hill tomorrow at noon for another twin bill.
Casey's two-run blast in the nightcap was a part of a 1-for-3 afternoon for the second baseman, who also worked three walks. Tim Lazor also drove in two runs courtesy of a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. James McCool had Lafayette's other extra-base knock with a double, while Matt Lerner picked up the final RBI with a base-knock.
Thomas Dunleavy, Bobby Fargnoli, Andrew Santomauro, Eric Anderson and Parker Hills all singled to cap the Lafayette attack. Santomauro stole two bags and scored twice from the leadoff spot, and Dunleavy also swiped a base.
John Gentile started and took the game one loss. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Gentile (0-9), who ceded three earned runs or less for the eighth straight outing, struck out a season-high six batters.
Starter Ethan Perro was on the hook in game two, falling to 1-5. He allowed three earned runs on five hits while striking out four batters in 3.2 frames of action.
Ben Meer, Toby Schwartz, Chris Boyce and Sean McGrath all turned in scoreless performances out of the bullpen in the doubleheader.
The Leopards held an early 2-1 lead in the opener before the Midshipmen posted three runs in the top of the fourth and never looked back en route to a 13-3 win. In the nightcap, Navy posted the first three runs of the game. Following Casey's home run that cut the margin to 3-2, the visitors tallied 19 unanswered runs. Lafayette would add a run in the bottom of the eighth to round out the 21-3 final.
After tomorrow's series finale, the Leopards travel to Long Island for a Wednesday outing before concluding the Patriot League regular season at Kamine Stadium with a four-game weekend set against Bucknell.
