ALBANY, N.Y.- The Lafayette field hockey team is starting to garner a lot of attention as it defeated its second top-25 team this season, taking down No. 21 Albany in Albany, N.Y. 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Senior co-captains Emily Valeo and Deanna DiCroce teamed up with sophomore Jenna Seybert for the first goal on a penalty corner. After over 30 minutes since that tying score, Valeo put one in the back of the net in the 86th minute for the victory.

"Albany is a strong, talented team, so I am very pleased to get the win at their field," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "It was a determined performance by our deep defense, as they were under pressure in overtime. We also got some excellent goalkeeping from Jessica."

Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch recorded five saves on the day, allowing just one goal on an Albany corner.

After a scoreless first half, Albany's Laura Page and Jessica Longstreth set up a corner opportunity for Fiori Van Rijswijk that she refused to waste as she slid it past Deutsch to open the scoring.

Just 11 minutes later, the 18th-ranked Leopards connected on a well-executed penalty corner, as Jenna Seybert blasted one past Albany goalkeeper Kristi Troch to tie the game at one apiece.

The score remained tied for the remainder of the second half and through the first over time period. Then, coach Griffiths explains what happened in the 86th minute.

"Emily's winning goal was a brilliant individual effort, beating three Albany defenders on the left side and slipping it between the keeper's legs for the finish."

Valeo's only shot on goal of the day was the deciding factor in Lafayette's 2-1 win.

Next up for Lafayette is the continuation of the postponed Rider Game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Leopards lead 2-0 with 6:15 left in the first half.
