Easton, Pa. - The Leopards came from behind to beat visiting Colgate in a crucial Patriot League matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half before Lafayette rattled off four straight to win, 4-3, and earn the fourth and final bid to the Patriot League Tournament.
"I was very happy with how the team responded to being down against a good Colgate team." Head coach Jennifer Stone said. "I am proud of the team's determination to come from behind in such a crucial game."
The Leopards found themselves down, 2-0, 20 minutes into the first half, but Lafayette battled its way back into the game. Kelsey Gula opened the scoring for the Leopards, diving to deflect a pass from Haley Keenan that found its way past Colgate's Amanda DiDomizio with 10 minutes to play in the opening frame. The Maroon and White threatened in the final minutes of the half, but a goal from Brittany Blass was called back and the Leopards went into the half down, 2-1.
Lafayette came out flying in the second half and found the equalizer off the stick of Kelsey Mead. Mead found a loose ball in the circle and knocked it into the Raider goal just three and a half minutes into the period. The Leopards continued to pressure and finally found the breakthrough off a penalty corner. Blass got her first of the afternoon in the 52nd minute, when Mead fed the corner to Kirby Szalkowski who teed the ball up for Blass.
The Maroon and White took advantage of another penalty corner in the 69th minute to make it 4-2. Blass deflected a Hannah Millen shot into the Colgate goal for her second tally of the day. The Raiders cut the lead to one in the final minute, but the Leopards went on to win, 4-3.
The Leopards outshot the Raiders, 22-4, firing 11 shots on target. Lafayette also held a 13-5 edge in penalty corners. Jessica Deutsch earned her sixth win of the season, while DiDomizio made 7 saves in the loss.
Lafayette returns to action tomorrow afternoon in its final home game of the season against No. 18 Temple. The Leopards finish the regular season at Boston University next Saturday.
