Easton, Pa. – The Lafayette field hockey team fell to American on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League play at Rappolt Field. The Leopards held an advantage in shots, 14-5, including 5-3 in shots on goal, and penalty corners, 8-2.
“These Patriot League games come with a lot of emotions, but today I thought that we played an outstanding game and created a lot of opportunities,” head coach Jennifer Stone said. A couple inches here and there it would have possibly been a different situation, credit to a good American team, but I am proud of the product that the team put out today. It tells a lot about our character, we compete for 70 minutes, the result is the result, but I am really proud of the group.”
Lafayette moved to 1-3 in League play, while American improved to 2-1. Katelyn Arnold made a pair of saves in the loss and Kate McBeath made five saves for the Eagles in the win.
The Leopards had the first chance of the game in the 19th minute, but Hannah Millen’s shot off the penalty corner was blocked by the American defense. Four minutes later another penalty corner threatened the Eagle goal. Kendall Weedling shot from the right side of the circle was stopped by McBeath.
Casey White played a ball in from the side of the circle that found its way into a dangerous area in front of the cage. Kelsey Mead’s redirection was just off target in the 29th minute. Lafayette’s best chance of the first half came in the final five minutes as Paige Macrae crossed the ball to the back post, but it was just out of the reach of Ellen Colbourne.
American got on the scoreboard early in the second half, as Leah DiGiandomenico finished off a pass from Kati Rothenhoefer in the 41st minute. The Leopards earned a penalty corner in the 56th minute, but were unable to convert.
In the 61st minute Brittany Blass fired a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner that was blocked. Lafayette was awarded a second penalty corner that Blass shot on frame. McBeath was able to stop the shot, but the Leopards were awarded a third consecutive corner.
On the ensuing corner, Amanda Magadan was stopped again by McBeath. A fourth corner was given to Lafayette in the 63rd minute. Jenna Seybert’s shot was stopped and Kelsey Mead’s attempt on the rebound was blocked away and cleared by the American defense, as the Eagles escaped with a 1-0 win.
The Leopards are back in action on the road against Bucknell on October 18.
