RICHMOND, Va. - Buffalo came out on the winning end of a pitchers' duel between Anthony Magovney and Lafayette rookie David Bednar, as the Bulls held on for a 2-1 win over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at The Diamond.
After Andrew Landolfi shot a single through the right side to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Lafayette was held without a base hit until the ninth inning when Campbell Lipe drove a single to center. Magovney twirled seven scoreless innings, giving up only the one hit to Landolfi, walked three and struck out one.
Buffalo (8-4) plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning and capitalized on an error to start the frame. With one out and Tyler Mautner on first base, Chris Kwitzer laced a triple to right field to put UB up 1-0. Nick Sinay was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one away, and Kwitzer scored on an error when Sinay stole second.
Bednar was solid throughout his 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week struck out six and walked one in his second-career start.
Trailing 2-0, the Leopards (5-7) threatened in the bottom half of the seventh inning when Magovney walked Parker Hills, hit Campbell Lipe with a pitch and issued a free pass to Eric Anderson. The one-out walk to Hills ended Magovney's run of retiring six consecutive Lafayette batters, and extended Hills' streak of reaching base safely to 11 games. With the bases full, Magovney escaped trouble as Alex Nickles and Matt Lawrence each flied out to the outfield.
Connor McMahon and Alex Farina each hurled a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to keep the game within reach heading into Lafayette's final at bat. Kevin Hughes, who threw a scoreless eighth inning, hit Hills with a pitch before Lipe's single. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to score Hills from third. A groundout by Alex Nickles allowed Lipe to move to third with two outs, before pinch hitter Tim Lazor struck out swinging to end the game.
Tuesday's game against Norfolk State has been cancelled.
