Easton, Pa. - Lafayette field hockey fell to visiting Boston University in both team's Patriot League opener. The Leopards moved to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in League play, while the Terriers improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League.
"I thought we created a lot of opportunities, but credit BU for taking advantage of their opportunities," head coach Jennifer Stone said, "We are excited to get back on the field against another quality opponent in Connecticut."
The Leopards threatened early with a pair of penalty corners, but the Terriers were able to clear both attempts. Boston University got on the scoreboard late in the first half, as Kali Shumock collected a pass from Sofi Laurito in the circle and pushed a shot past Jessica Deutsch.
After a pair of penalty corners ten minutes into the second half, Lafayette found the back of the cage. Kelsey Mead's corner was stopped by Kirby Szalkowski for Jenna Seybert to fire past BU's Valentina Cerda Eimbcke to tie the score at one.
Three minutes later the Terriers answered to take a 2-1 lead. Shumock's pass was finished by Amanda Cassera with just over 20 minutes to play. Lafayette created chances in the final ten minutes, including back-to-back shots from Amanda Magadan and Mead, but BU was able to keep the Leopards out and hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Deutsch made four saves on the afternoon, while Cerda Eimbcke stopped three shots in the win. Lafayette held a 5-1 advantage on penalty corners and Boston University outshot the Leopards 9-7.
The Leopards are back in action at 1 p.m. tomorrow against Connecticut. Tomorrow's game will be Lafayette's Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Game.
