Easton, Pa. - The Leopards fell to No. 6 Connecticut 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in non-league field hockey play. Brittany Blass tallied her second goal of the season, while Katelyn Arnold made five saves for Lafayette.
"Overall I was pleased with the performance, I think it was a really good response from yesterday's loss," head coach Jennifer Stone said, "I think it says a lot our team as a group fighting until the end, but the reality is that we made errors at times in the game that will turn into corners and goals. I was happy with our performance against a very good UConn team."
Lafayette (4-4) created a pair of scoring chances early on as Jenna Seybert's shot from a penalty corner was blocked in the third minute and an attempt from Blass sailed over the cage in the fifth minute. A minute later Connecticut (6-0) had its first chance of the afternoon, but Arnold was there to answer the call. In the tenth minute Arnold came up with another big save to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Leopards earned another penalty corner in the 24th minute, but Seybert's shot was stopped by the UConn goalie. Lafayette final broke through in the 29th minute as Kelsey Mead's penalty corner was stopped by Ami Turner for Blass to fire into the cage to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies threatened early in the second half with a penalty corner, but the Lafayette defense was able to block the shot and clear the danger. Connecticut took advantage of a penalty corner in the 45th minute Roisin Upton found Sophie Bowden at the post for a tap in to tie the game at one.
Two minutes later Seybert's attempt from a penalty corner was turned away Nina Klein. At the other end, another Connecticut corner was stopped by Arnold. The Huskies broke the deadlock in the 55th minute as Upton finished a penalty corner to give UConn a 2-1 advantage.
The Leopards had a chance at the end of the game on a penalty corner. Blass fired a shot from the top of the circle, but Klein was there for the save. After a scramble in front of the cage, Amanda Magadan found the loose ball, but her attempt just missed the net, and the Huskies escaped with a 2-1 victory.
Lafayette is back in action on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against Penn at Rappolt Field.
