West Long Branch, N.J. - Amanda Magadan tallied two goals and an assist to help the Lafayette field hockey take down Monmouth 3-1 on Friday afternoon in West Long Branch, N.J. The Leopards improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1999.
The Maroon and White controlled the first fifteen minutes of the game, generating three penalty corners. Ami Turner and Ellen Colbourne each had chances cleared off the line. Lafayette finally broke through in the 18th minute as Magadan tallied her third goal of the season, tipping the ball into an empty cage.
Monmouth answered less than a minute later to tie the game at one midway through the first period. Lafayette threatened late in the first half with a penalty corner. On the ensuing corner, the Leopards earned a penalty stroke, but Monmouth's Christen Piersanti turned away the Brittany Blass attempt.
Lafayette took the lead in the 50th minute on Turner's first goal of the season. Magadan pushed a rebound off a blocked shot to Turner, who fired it home to give the Leopards a 2-1 advantage. Magadan doubled the Lafayette edge with less than five minutes to go, tallying her second of the afternoon on a feed from Colbourne. The Leopards would go on to beat the Hawks, 3-1.
Jessica Deutsch made three saves as she improved to 3-0 on the season, while Monmouth's Piersanti stopped three shots in the loss. The Leopards held a 14-10 advantage in shots, while the Hawks won the corner count, 10-6.
Lafayette is back in action at Rutgers on Sunday afternoon.
