New Brunswick, N.J. - Lafayette's comeback bid fell just short as Rutgers held on for a 2-1 win over the Leopards. The Maroon and White fell to 3-1 this season, while the Scarlet Knights improved to 3-1.
Rutgers got on the board two minutes into the game on a goal by Nicole Imbriaco. Fifteen minutes later the Leopards got their first chance on a penalty corner. Shots by Kelsey Mead and Rosie Shanks were both stopped by the Rutgers' goalie.
In the 22nd minute the Scarlet Knights threatened again. They were able take advantage of a rebound as Devon Freshnock doubled the deficit to 2-0.
Just before the half the Leopards cut the Rutgers' lead to one. Mead found Kendall Weedling for her first goal of the season at 34:45. Lafayette went into the break trailing 2-1.
Ten minutes into the second half Lafayette earned a penalty corner, but shots from Jenna Seybert and Amanda Magadan were turned away by Rutgers' goalie Shevaun Hayes. The Leopards were awarded another penalty corner, but Brittany Blass' shot was blocked by the Rutgers defense. A third penalty corner resulted in a pair of shots from Blass and Colbourne, but both attempts were saved by Hayes.
The Leopards had chances from Colbourne and Magadan late in the game, but neither was able to find the back of the cage, as the Scarlet Knights held on to beat Lafayette 2-1.
Jessica Deutsch made four saves in the loss, while Hayes made six saves in the win. Rutgers held a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners, while the Leopards outshot the Scarlet Knights 11-9.
Lafayette is back in action Friday night for its home opener against Liberty at 7 p.m.
