EASTON, Pa. - Senior left-hander Toby Schwartz helped the Lafayette baseball team to a doubleheader split with Lehigh on Sunday at Kamine Stadium by firing a complete-game shutout in game one with nine strikeouts.
Lehigh claimed game two in extra innings to clinch the series after sweeping the doubleheader on Saturday. With the Patriot League regular season now complete, fourth-seeded Lafayette (11-22-1, 9-11) will travel to No. 1 Navy May 9-10 for a best-of-three series. Lehigh (18-25, 12-8) earned the second seed and will host third-place Holy Cross.
In the 3-0 victory, Schwartz pitched all seven innings to register his second complete game of the season and third of his career. His last shutout came in 2013 as a sophomore. The Ramsey, N.J., native allowed just four hits and a walk, while going 1-for-3 with the bat.
Lafayette pushed the game's first run across in the second inning when Luke Robinson laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to bring home Tyler Hudson, who had set the table with a triple to right-center field.
The Leopards tacked on another pair in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles from Schwartz and Campell Lipe. Schwartz would then fan six batters over the next four innings to close out the win.
The Mountain Hawks struck first in the nightcap, plating three runs on five hits in the third inning. Mike Garzillo's double brought home Justin Pacchioli and Jacen Nalesnik to get things started, and he scored three batters later on a single by David Young.
Junior right-hander Mitch Leeds took over on the mound to start the fourth for Lafayette and he faced the minimum 15 batters over his five scoreless innings of work, allowing just one hit and one walk.
The Leopards managed to tie the game in the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits. A double by Brett Thompson was followed by another double by Lipe to account for the first run. Following consecutive walks drawn by Schwartz and Hudson, Parker Hills delivered an RBI base knock and Rob Caliento lifted a sacrifice fly to even the score.
The game remained locked at 3-3 until the top of the 10th, when Pacchioli and Nalesnik led off with back-to-back singles for Lehigh. Pacchioli moved to third on a fielder's choice grounder by Garzillo and touched home on a sacrifice fly from Patrick Donnelly to give Lehigh the lead. Garzillo later came around to score on a single by John Elson for an insurance run.
The Leopards threatened in the bottom of the 10th by loading the bases on a single and two walks, but Lehigh's Connor Donovan earned the save after coming on in relief for the final two batters.
Lafayette has five non-conference games remaining before the Patriot League playoffs begin, with the first scheduled for Wednesday against Rider at 3:30 p.m. at Kamine Stadium.
