ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The fourth-seeded Lafayette baseball team's Patriot League title hopes are still alive following a doubleheader split with No. 1 Navy on Saturday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. The series' decisive game three will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Leopards (14-26-1) racked up 17 hits in game one to win 10-8, their first Patriot League Tournament victory since advancing to the championship round in 2009. Navy (35-18) answered in game two by tallying 19 hits, avoiding elimination with a 12-0 victory.
Game three will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network. The winner will move on to play the winner of Holy Cross and Navy, who also split their two games on Saturday.
GAME ONE
The Leopards took advantage of a pair of Navy miscues to score the day's first run in the second inning. After Tyler Hudson reached on a single, Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Luke Gillingham tossed a wild pitch that prompted Hudson to take second. Navy catcher Adrian Chinnery then threw the ball into center field on the play, which allowed Hudson to race to third. Luke Robinson tallied the RBI when he followed with a ground out to second base that brought Hudson home.
In the top of the fourth, Campbell Lipe hit a ball off the top of the left-field wall that was originally ruled a home run but changed to a double after a conference by the umpires. The next batter, Hudson, was hit by a pitch, before Robinson drew a walk to load the bases. Gillingham exited after the walk due to injury, and Parker Hills and Steven Cohen immediately responded with a pair of two-run singles to give the Leopards a 5-0 lead.
The Midshipmen got on the board in the fifth when Connor Deneen hit a two-run triple to left field that scored Robert Currie and Sean Trent, who each singled.
Navy used four hits and an error in the seventh to knot the game at 5-5. With the bases loaded, Leland Saile singled to score Trent, and Ben McGrath drew a walk to force Chinnery home. Following a double play, Travis Blue's infield single plated Saile for the game's tying run.
The Leopards got those three runs right back, plus two more, in the eighth by spraying the outfield with seven singles. Two of the runs were driven in by Jackson Kramer, while one RBI each came from Cohen, Schwartz and Alex Woinski.
The Midshipmen threatened again with another trio of runs in the bottom half of the eighth when Saile produced an RBI double and McGrath plated two runs on a base hit to left, but Connor McMahon would pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close the door and register his fifth save of the season.
Ryan Callanan retired three batters in the seventh to pick up his second win in relief of Schwartz, who tossed the first six frames while allowing just two runs. Navy's Kyle Condry was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one run over 3.1 innings in unexpected relief of the injured Gillingham.
GAME TWO (Lafayette was the designated home team in this game.)
In the top of the second, Navy took a 3-0 lead by route of the rare, inside-the-park home run. With Deneen and McGrath on base following a pair of singles, Logan Knowles hit a fly ball toward the left-field corner. Robinson made a diving effort but could not come up with the catch and the ball took a fortuitous bounce in the other direction, allowing Knowles to complete the round trip.
The Midshipmen picked up three more runs in the third inning to double their lead. Saile drove home Chinnery for the first run before McGrath tripled to the deepest part of center field to score Deneen and Saile.
Navy added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh on a double by Saile and another in the eighth on a single from Trent, before putting the game out of reach in the ninth with three runs on five hits.
Lafayette was unable to present a true threat against Navy starter Stephen Moore, who allowed just five hits and walk over seven innings of work. He struck out five before the Navy bullpen took over in the eighth to preserve the shutout.
Lafayette starter David Bednar took the loss, though he struck out six in five innings.
