PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Jarrel Bobb and Devin Smith each approached school-record times, while Kelly Reager and Brigid McGill won their respective races to lead Lafayette at the Rutgers Invitational this weekend, as the Leopards returned to action after a five-week winter break hiatus.
Bobb placed second out of 22 runners in the 400-meter dash, and his IC4A qualifying time of 48.26 was only 14-hundredths behind Bill Kovalczyk's school-record mark which was set all the way back in 1978. He was one of two runner-ups on the men's side, as Austin Wiles took second in the high jump with a top effort of 1.89 meters.
Smith was the third-fastest qualifier in the 60 dash after completing the preliminaries in 7.87. She lowered that time to a personal-best mark of 7.76 in the finals, taking fourth-place in the race and finishing one-hundredth back of Asia Hollis' school-record time of 7.75 posted in 2008. Smith was similarly close to breaking her own school-mark in the 200 dash, crossing the line two-hundredths away from the record with a time of 25.16 that placed her third in the event on Saturday.
Reager and McGill earned the two victories of the weekend for the Leopards. Reager (2:19.49) topped seven other competitors in the 800 meters, edging out Rider's Madeline Hummel by 0.35 for the top spot. McGill, meanwhile, beat out 16 runners in the 3000 meters, and her time of 10:57.79 was over three seconds ahead of Rider's Lexie Taylor in second place. Isabella Maita (11:05.26) followed McGill in fifth place.
Drew Davis had a pair of solid showings in the sprints for the women, taking fifth in the 400 dash (58.01) and seventh in the 200 dash (26.12), and Lafayette's 4x400 meter relay team of Smith, Reager, Casey O'Brien and Alexa Kwapinski finished their race in 4:03.26 to earn a fourth-place result.
Mara Blanchard (3.00 meters) placed second in the pole vault and Laura Oh (11.46 meters) was fourth out of 17 competitors in the shot put to lead the Maroon and White women in the field.
Cory Pressl, Dave McGriff and Patrick Corcoran were among the Leopards' strong performers on the men's side. Pressl took sixth in the 60 hurdles with a personal-best result of 8.91, while McGriff and Corcoran each had top-five showings in the throws. McGriff was fourth out of 10 student-athletes in the shot put with a top toss of 14.64 meters, and Corcoran finished fourth out of 14 in the weight throw (15.31 meters).
In addition to his runner-up finish in the 400 dash, Bobb took fourth in the 200 dash after crossing the line in a new indoor personal-best and IC4A qualifying time of 22.23. That mark is the seventh-fastest indoor time in program history.
Charlie Hoyt (2:02.40) added a fourth-place finish in the 800 meters, while Wes Shipp (fifth, 1.89 meters - high jump) and Michael Thorne (third, 4.10 meters - pole vault) rounded out Lafayette's top-five showings.
The Leopards are back at it on Staten Island, N.Y., next weekend, participating in the Spartan Regional Preview on Friday and the Great Dane Classic on Saturday.
