BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a pair of postponements due to this past weekend's snowstorm, Lafayette and Lehigh were finally able to square off in their annual indoor dual meet Monday evening. Jarrell Bobb led the Maroon and White with four event victories, and Devin Smith added a pair of wins on the track for the women, but the host Mountain Hawks men's and women's teams still both managed to emerge with victories.
The Leopards picked up 10 first-place finishes overall. Lafayette fell by a 104-77 margin on the men's side, while the Lehigh women won by a 115-66 final.
Bobb took first in two events in the field and two on the track. In the long jump, his top mark of 23' 6 1/4" was a new personal-best, and it was the fifth-furthest indoor jump in school history. The Bushkill, Pa., native also bested the Mountain Hawks in the triple jump with a top attempt of 47' 1".
In the sprints, Bobb was victorious in the 60-meter dash (7.08) and the 200 dash (22.66). Thomas Day added a third Lafayette triumph in the 800 meters, with his time of 2:00.55 edging out Lehigh's Clay Stabolepszy by 0.38.
The Leopards top team result came in the weight throw, where Patrick Corcoran, Dave McGriff and Dan Sweitzer finished 1-2-3. Corcoran set a new personal-best in the process, and his top throw of 54' 10 3/4" was the sixth-best indoor result in the history of the program.
McGriff also placed second in the shot put (50' 8"), and Lafayette had three additional runner-up performances on the track. Kia Shahideh (1:09.15) set a new PR in the 500 dash, while Michael Smitelli (52.37) and Tyler Pressl (2:37.48) placed second in the 400 dash and 1000 meters, respectively.
On the women's side, Smith's two victories came in the 200 dash and the 400 dash. She crossed the line in 25.72 in the 200, and she cruised to a win nearly three seconds ahead of her closest Lehigh competitor in the 400 with a mark of 58.48.
Drew Davis picked up an additional first-place result in the 500 dash (1:17.54), and Mara Blanchard had the lone win in the field for the Leopards with a top effort of 10' 11 3/4" in the pole vault.
Erin Keen came closest to earning another win for the Maroon and White in the 60 dash. Her time of 8.14 was only one-hundredth back of Lehigh's Katie Hatler in first place. Kelly Reager posted an additional second-place track showing, registering a time of 3:03.25 in the 1000 meters.
Laura Oh, meanwhile, added a pair of strong efforts in the throws. She was second in the shot put with a top attempt of 39' 7", and she set a new personal-best with her top distance of 47' 2 1/4" in the weight throw.
Lafayette will be right back in Bethlehem next weekend, taking part in the Covert Classic this Saturday, with that meet scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
