HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Lafayette field hockey team caged a season-high four goals in a 4-0 Patriot League win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
The Leopards (7-3, 2-0 PL) outshot Colgate 20-3 in the win, with four different Lafayette players finding the back of the cage.
"Today was a solid team performance with points being generated from a lot of different players," Lafayette head field hockey coach Jennifer Stone said.
This was the second time this season that the Leopards held their opponent to under four shots in a game.
"Katelyn Arnold and the rest of the defensive unit were diligent throughout the game to record another shutout win," Stone stated. "We've been working on staying structured defensively which helps lead us to quality attacks."
The Leopards had plenty of quality attacks against the Raiders (1-11, 0-3 PL) as eight of the first 10 shots taken by the Maroon and White were on goal, including six coming off corners.
However, those eight shots on goal were denied by the Raiders' (1-11, 0-3 PL) goalkeeper, Maria Krull, who leads the nation in saves with 144 this season. Lafayette did squeak one past Krull in the 29th minute when Ellen Colbourne dribbled into the circle and fired the ball at the cage, where it was redirected in by freshman Sam Di Maio, marking her first collegiate career score.
The pressure continued to mount as the Leopards constantly attacked the Colgate cage. In the 30th minute, Colbourne inserted a ball off a penalty corner. Amanda Magadan got a touch on it and tapped it over to Cody Hunsicker, who rifled a shot into the back of the cage to put the Leopards up by a pair of scores. The goal was Hunsicker's first as a Leopard.
The Raiders were held to just two shots in the first half, both coming in the closing two minutes. The first was put on goal and saved by Arnold, the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, while the other sailed wide.
In the first couple minutes of the second stanza, the Raiders got another shot off on goal, but once again, Arnold sent it away.
The two teams were quiet for a short period, but then Liza Welch was dribbling the ball on the end line in the 44th minute before she quickly turned to find Ami Turner in front of the cage for the score to put Lafayette up 3-0.
Over the course of the first 63 minutes of action, Magadan had taken five total shots. Three were saved while the other two went wide. However, in the 64th minute, she received a ball from Turner and fired it into the cage for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The Leopards will resume conference play on the road on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Holy Cross. The game is slated for 11 a.m.
