LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team dropped its final Patriot League road game of the season 3-0 to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.
It was a pivotal game the Bison as a loss would eliminate Bucknell from postseason contention. For the Leopards, a loss would place them in a three-team tie for the fourth and final spot in the Patriot League tournament with one last conference game to play.
The Leopards (7-8, 2-3 PL) struggled to generate many scoring opportunities and were outshot 15-2 by the Bison (7-8, 2-3 PL).
Bucknell was awarded back-to-back penalty corners in the ninth minute. The first attempt resulted in a shot by Stephanie Dressler that was blocked. However, on the second corner, the Bison capitalized once Dressler received the ball from Marisa Morakis and blasted it off of a Lafayette player's stick and into the cage.
The Leopards kept it a one-score game as Katelyn Arnold sent away a pair of Bucknell shots in the opening stanza. However, in the early stages of the second half, the Bison were given another penalty corner and once again scored. This time it was Anna wills who put the ball into the cage off of the assist by Estelle Palandijan.
Lafayette looked to counter and a couple minutes later, Amanda Magadan sent a strike towards the Bucknell cage, but it was saved by Emily Finn, the Bison goalkeeper.
Over the course of the next 27 minutes, the Bison placed a total of five shots on goal. However, their shots fell short as Arnold was able to deny them all.
In the 68th minute, Bucknell was on a breakaway and Brittany Willwerth sent the ball over to Nicole Rupnik, who squeezed the shot under a diving Arnold for the score to put the game away.
The Leopards will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they play host to Harvard for a 2 p.m. non-conference game at Rappolt Field.
