WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Lafayette participated in its final tune-up meet prior to next weekend's Patriot League Indoor Championships, with all-time Top 10 performances from Alexa Kwapinski and Kelly Reager highlighting the Maroon and White's effort at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Open Saturday afternoon.
Kwapinski placed second out of 20 runners in the 1000-meter run, and her time of 2:58.45 was the fourth-fastest indoor time in program history. It was only eight-hundredths back of Monmouth's Molly McKeon in first place, and it was one of five runner-up showings for the Leopards on the day.
Devin Smith, Drew Davis, Stephanie McCartney and Wes Shipp had the other second-place results, while Reager's fifth-place time of 1:18.29 in the 500 dash put her 10th all-time in school history for that event.
Lafayette's women finished tied for third out of 11 scoring Division I teams overall, tallying 81 points, while the 50 points earned by the men's squad placed them tied for fifth overall.
Smith competed in the 60 dash in the first track event of the day, taking second place out of 67 runners after crossing the line in 7.82, six-hundredths off her season-best result set at Rutgers in early January.
McCartney (19:15.40) then topped all Division I runners and placed second overall in the 5000 meters, while the Leopards had a pair of top five finishers in the 200 dash to conclude the individual track portion of the meet. Davis ran a 25.99 to finish second out of 59 competitors, while Erin Keen (26.35) was right behind in fourth place.
Caroline Harmon added another top five finish for the Maroon and White on the women's side. Her time of 5:17.57 put her third in the mile, only 0.10 back of second place.
Shipp led the men's squad with his runner-up performance in the high jump. His top effort of 6' 4 1/4" bested 15 other student-athletes and marked a new season-best for the senior.
Thomas Day (4:22.00) picked up a third-place result in the mile, and Dave McGriff and Michael Thorne each placed fifth in results in the field. McGriff had a top throw of 50' 8 1/4" in the shot put, while Thorne established a new season-best of 14' 3 1/4" in the pole vault.
Monmouth earned 251 points to take first place on the women's side, well-ahead of Towson's 91 points in second place. Monmouth's margin on the men's side was even greater, with the Hawks totaling 270 points compared to 88 points for second-place Siena.
This year's Patriot League Indoor Championships will take place at Boston University from Feb. 19-21. A full preview of the meet will be available later on in the week.
