PHILADELPHIA - After a tough spring break trip for the Lafayette pitching staff junior David Bednar delivered an ace-like performance to lead the Leopards to a 3-1 victory at Penn in Game 1 of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader.
Bednar tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing only three hits while matching a career-high with 11 strikeouts. Mitch Leeds was similarly impressive in Game 2, fanning nine batters and surrendering just one earned run, but a six-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the Quakers to salvage a split with a 7-5 triumph.
Playing from his customary leadoff position in the lineup, Michael Coniglio went 5-for-9 with three stolen bases across the twin bill to pace the Lafayette offense. He is now 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts this season.
GAME 1
The first two of Coniglio's swipes on the afternoon came in the top-half of the opening inning. After picking up a leadoff single, he stole second and third base to allow Campbell Lipe to bring him home on an RBI groundout.
Bednar was sharp from the get-go, striking out the side in the bottom of the first. Matt McGeagh accounted for Penn's only run with a leadoff homer in the third inning to level the score up at 1-1., but the Leopards quickly moved back ahead in the fourth. Steven Cohen led off with a single, reached second on a stolen base, and made it to third on a single to left by Alex Woinski. Cohen then crossed the plate after Andrew Landolfi reached base on a fielder's choice.
No Quaker made it past first base in the final three innings. Bednar retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings, and he allowed only a two-out single to McGeagh in the seventh. Lafayette added a key insurance run in the top-half of that frame on a two-out single from Jackson Kramer.
That base knock scored Spencer Rouse, who had swiped second base after reaching on a one-out walk. The Maroon and White were a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases attempts in the opening contest.
Bednar had previously managed 11 strikeouts on May 2 last season in an 8-2 win over NJIT. He is now 2-1 on the season after today's victory.
GAME 2
Lafayette scored a run apiece in the first, third and fifth innings to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. Cohen registered an RBI single in the first, while the other two runs scored on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Kramer.
Leeds did not allow a run through five, but he was relieved by David Giusti after walking Matt Greskoff to begin the sixth frame. Greskoff would later score on a RBI single to get the home side on the scoreboard.
The Leopards, though, moved ahead by four after plating a pair in the top of the seventh. Drew Aherne picked up the second of his two singles to score AJ Kloehn, and Aherne made it home on a single up the middle from Coniglio.
Penn was able to avoid the sweep with a six-run rally in the bottom-half of the inning. A single followed by three-straight doubles to begin the frame reduced the margin to 5-4. The tying run then scored on a fielding error, and a double from Andrew Murnane with two outs plated a pair of unearned runs off Ryan Callanan (0-1).
Landolfi and Kloehn singled with two outs in the eighth to put the tying run on base, but Jake Nelson induced a groundout from Aherne to end the threat. Nelson stayed on to earn the save in the ninth inning.
These two teams will be right back action tomorrow afternoon, with Sunday's doubleheader from Kamine Stadium set to begin at 12 p.m.
