Leopards Fall Late in Opener at Davidson

March 4, 2016

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Junior RHP David Bednar delivered one of the strongest outings of his collegiate career, tossing seven scoreless innings in his second start of the season, but Lafayette was dealt a frustrating 2-1 loss after host Davidson rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

The Leopards got the first out of the frame, but a walk and a triple leveled up the score and pinch-hitter Ward Coleman came up with a walk-off single to right past a drawn-in infield.

Bednar gave up only three hits and a pair of walks on the mound while striking out five Wildcats. Dan Leckie supplied the only run for Lafayette (1-5) with a two-out RBI double down the right field line in the third inning.

Two of the three hits for Davidson (5-4) off Bednar came in the first inning, but the home side never had more than one runner on the base paths. Bednar generated a double play after giving up a leadoff single to Cam Johnson, and he struck out Alec Acosta looking after surrendering a two-out double.

The only baserunner for the Wildcats in the next three frames was the result of a Lafayette error. Davidson had another hitter reach second base in the fifth, but AJ Kloehn threw out Eric Jones attempting to steal third base to end the threat.

The Maroon and White stranded four runners over the next two innings. There were Leopards on second and third with one out in the seventh after a single from Tyler Hudson and a double from pinch-hitter Patrick Nelson. A strikeout and a groundout, sandwiched around an intentional walk to Michael Coniglio, kept the visitors off the scoreboard.

Both of Bednar's walks came in the bottom of the seventh, with the second of those free passes putting runners on the corners with two outs. He forced a popout from Eric Jones to leave the mound in line for a win.

Ari Kaufman worked around trouble in a scoreless eighth, as Davidson had runners on first and second with no one out and the top of the lineup coming to the plate. A failed sacrifice and a double play ended the threat.

Kaufman, though, took the loss after facing the first three batters in the ninth. Clark Beeker (2-0) went the distance for the Wildcats, striking out seven in his nine innings of work.

Leckie and Steven Cohen each went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Leopards offensively, with each picking up their third multi-hit game of the young season.

Game two of this weekend's three-game set will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Note:

This was the second time in Bednar's career in which he pitched at least seven innings while failing to allow an earned run, and the first where no runs crossed the plate. Bednar allowed a pair of unearned runs over seven in his second collegiate start against Buffalo on March 15, 2014.
