DAVIDSON, N.C. - A wild, back-and-forth game ended in Lafayette's favor on Saturday afternoon, as the Leopards set new season-highs in runs and hits in a 14-9 triumph over Davidson.
Lafayette (2-5) scored the first three runs of the game before seeing the Wildcats (5-5) respond with seven runs of their own across the third through fifth innings. The Maroon and White then scored 11 runs in their final four trips to the plate to lock up their second win of the 2016 season.
Campbell Lipe set new career-bests with four hits and four RBIs from the cleanup position, while Dan Leckie supplied four hits and a pair of RBIs from the No. 2 spot. Michael Coniglio and AJ Kloehn also chipped in three hits and two RBIs apiece.
Wildness from Wildcat starter Durin O'Linger helped the Leopards push across two runs in the first inning. After back-to-back singles from Leckie and Steven Cohen, both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Lipe scored Leckie on a groundout, and Cohen crossed the plate after a second wild pitch of the frame.
Starter Mitch Leeds retired the home side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, and the Maroon and White added another run in the second. Coniglio came through with a one-out single up the middle to score Kloehn, who had led off the inning with a single of his own.
Davidson managed one run in both the third and fourth innings, and the Wildcats grabbed the lead with a five-run fifth.
Lafayette, though, wasted little time getting back in the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Leckie drove in his first run with a one-out single to left, and Lipe plated two more with a base hit to right two batters later.
The Leopards retook the lead with a two-out rally in the seventh. Andrew Landolfi got things started with his second hit of the game, and he crossed the plate on a double from Coniglio. Leckie then delivered a clutch go-ahead single to right to make it 8-7.
Back-to-back doubles from Cohen and Lipe kept things rolling for the Maroon and White offense to begin the eighth, and Tyler Hudson and Jackson Kramer added RBI base knocks later in the frame. Patrick Nelson picked up his first RBI of the season in the ninth, and a two-run single from Kloehn rounded out the scoring.
Ryan Callanan surrendered one hit in a scoreless ninth to close out the win.
Lafayette's win this afternoon sets up a rubber match between the two teams on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
Notes:
With his four hits today, Leckie upped his season average to .400, which is the highest among Lafayette's starters. He is 12-for-30 from the plate to begin his collegiate career while also contributing a team-high four doubles.
Coniglio picked up his second three-hit game of the young season, and he leads the team with six runs scored after crossing the plate three times this afternoon.
