BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lafayette posted victories in both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relays at the Lehigh Games on Saturday, and both times were good enough to qualify the Leopards for postseason competition.
Alexa Kwapinski also entered the all-time top-10 list in the 800m on Saturday, while Patrick Corcoran moved up to third all-time in the hammer competing at the 122nd-annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Marcus Vilme, Michael Smitelli, Jake Hubertus and Jarrel Bobb completed the 4x100 relay in 42.47, edging out Lehigh by 0.22 and booking a spot for the Maroon and White at the IC4A Championships in mid-May. On the women's side, Drew Davis, Erin Keen, Erica Swinton and Devin Smith qualified for the ECAC Championships after topping Lehigh and five other schools with a time of 47.66.
Lafayette additionally swept the pole vault events in Bethlehem, with Michael Thorne and Mara Blanchard each besting 15 others to win their respective competitions. Thorne posted a PR clearance of 14' 11 1/2" which leaves him alone in ninth place in the all-time program record book, while Blanchard placed first with a top effort of 11' 5 1/4".
Kwapinski finished fourth out of 38 runners in the 800m, and her time of 2:16.39 was the 10th-fastest in program history. Also on the track, the Leopards had three top-10 finishers in the 200 dash, with Smith (second - 25.17), Davis (third - 25.59) and Tessa Broholm (10th - 26.84) all managing strong showings. Broholm added a fifth-place result in the 400 dash, crossing the line in a PR time of 58.97.
In addition to her pole vault performance, Blanchard placed fourth out of 25 runners in the 100 dash (13.13). Dejana Harris, meanwhile, took fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:05.65) and Swinton was sixth in the 100 hurdles (15.63). In the field, Laura Oh finished fifth in the discus (126' 11"), sixth in the shot put (39' 7 1/4") and sixth in the hammer (147' 10"), with her hammer distance marking a new career-best.
On the men's side, David Sadvary posted a new PR of 9:54.55 in the 3000m steeplechase, giving him third place out of nine runners. Hubertus placed fifth out of 29 in the 200 dash (22.97) while Tom Strand was not far behind in ninth place (23.33). Preston Bejabeng (eighth - 11.68) and Matt McMurray (ninth - 1:59.14) also cracked the top 10 in the 100 dash and 800m, respectively.
In the field, Wes Shipp placed third out of 13 competitors in the high jump (6' 2 1/4"), edging out teammate Matt Beck, who had an identical distance but placed sixth due to differences in the number of attempts. Steve Young was sixth out of 21 in the long jump (20' 11 1/4") and Collin Owen took seventh out of 17 in the javelin (162' 4").
Corcoran and teammate Dave McGriff had the unique opportunity to compete individually in the prestigious Penn Relays, and both put up strong performances. Corcoran finished 10th in the hammer, with his top toss of 186' 8" topping his previous best in the event by over four feet. He moved up from fourth to third in the all-time record books. McGriff took part in the discus, finishing eighth with a top distance of 171' 10". The Leopards also had men's and women's 4x400m relay teams compete at historic Franklin Field.
Next up for the track & field squads is the Patriot League Outdoor Championships, which will take place at Bucknell on Friday and Saturday next weekend. More info on the conference meet can be found here.
