STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lafayette men's and women's track & field teams both finished second among all competing Division I schools at the Spartan Regional Invite on Friday afternoon.
Out of the three Division I schools in attendance, the Leopards finished the day-long event in second, behind Rider's 341.75 total points. Lafayette tallied 116.25 points, while St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the top three with 64 points.
In the throws, it was David McGriff who shined in the shot put with the best all-around throw at his distance of 15.41m. The junior followed that up with a second-place showing in the weight throw (14.39m). Senior Patrick Corcoran also had a solid meet, finishing with the fourth-best distance in the shot put at 13.86m and first in the weight throw (16.39m). On the women's side, senior Laura Oh placed fourth in both the shot put (11.87m) and in the weight throw (13.41m).
The jumpers performed well at the meet for the Leopards as junior Michael Thorne reached the top height in the men's pole vault at 4.55m while fellow junior Steve Young finished second in the long jump with his distance of 6.15m. In the men's high jump, juniors Sam Cutrone and Matt Beck and senior Austin Wiles all tied for second at 1.88m.
For the women, senior Mara Blanchard had the best height in the pole vault at 3.35m, while classmate Sarah Shoop placed fourth at 2.90m. In the triple jump, senior Ingrid Yovo took third at 9.62m.
When the runners took to the track, sophomore Jacob Hubertus just missed placing in the top five in the 200m with a time of 23.58, but bounced back and finished fifth in the 400m at 52.44. In the 500m, junior Kia Shahideh (1:09.62) finished third, while freshman Peter Bokma (1:10.25) placed fifth.
In the women's 200m, Lafayette had a pair of top-five finishers in junior Dina Naphor, who placed third (26.94) and Blanchard (27.36), who placed fifth. Sophomore Samira Sujak placed first in the 1000m with her time of 3:10.33.
The women went on to take three of the top five spots in the mile as junior Katie Millar placed second (5:26.47), senior Brigid McGill finished third (5:31.84), and freshman Courtney Geisenehimer took fifth (5:43.59). In the 3000m, sophomore Brook Blackshaw finished fourth at 11.14.38.
