Davis Takes First in 400m at PL Championships

BOSTON - Senior Drew Davis highlighted the Patriot League Championships for the Lafayette track & field team after she finished first in the 400m, setting a new indoor personal best on Sunday afternoon at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.

Her time of 55.55 was an ECAC qualifier and marked the second straight year that a Lafayette runner won the 400m. Devin Smith '16, who currently holds the Patriot League record in the 400m, took first in the event a season ago.

The Lafayette men and women combined to earn 18 top-eight finishes at the three-day long league indoor championships. Both the men and women finished in seventh at the meet that included all Patriot League schools.

MEN

The men compiled 12 top-eight finishes that was highlighted by Sam Cutrone's fourth-place showing in the heptathlon with 4664 total points, more than 200 points better than his personal best. In his first indoor championships, Tyler Hubeny placed ninth in the same event after totaling 4326 points, a 300 point personal record.

The personal records continued for the Leopards as Steve Young showcased his talents in the long jump, leaping 6.96m (22' 10"), which was good for a fifth-place finish and a personal best.

Also adding to the men's score was Dave McGriff and Patrick Corcoran, who both finished in the top-10 of the weight throw. McGriff placed sixth at 16.34m (53'0.25"), while Corcoran placed eighth at 15.49m (50'10"). McGriff would go on to finish seventh in the shot put at 15.82m (51' 11"), which was an IC4A qualifying distance.

The Leopards also earned points in the high jump as Austin Wiles led the Maroon and White finishing in seventh at 1.94m (6' 4.25"). Brendan Doyle and Matt Beck placed right behind Wiles at 1.89m (6' 2.25").

In the 400m, Dan Hogan took eighth at 49.91, while Tom Strand finished seventh in the 500m after crossing at 1:05.50. Hogan and Strand were also part of the 4x400 relay team that took fifth with a time of 3:20.62 and included Kia Shahideh and Justin Johnson.

In the pole vault, Michael Thorne placed eighth after clearing at 4.50m (14' 9").

WOMEN

The women had six top-eight showings during the three-day event. The group of Caroline Harmon, Alexa Kwapinski, Crosby Spiess and Kelly Reager placed sixth in the 4x800m relay with a time of 9:11.21, marking the second fastest time in Lafayette history, coming eight-hundredths of a second away from the school record. The four also qualified for the ECAC Championships.

Reager and Kwapinski would also capture a top-10 finishes in separate events. Reager was the 10th runner to cross in the 500m at 1:16.80, while Kwapinski finished seventh in the 1000m at 2:58.46.

In the 5000m, Emily Moore finished seventh in the 5000m with her time of 17.20.13, which was also was the second-best time in school history and qualified her for the ECAC Championships.

Lafayette nabbed a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 relay with Tessa Broholm, Reager, Davis and Spiess crossing at 3:52.07.

Davis also earned points for the Leopards once she nabbed a ninth-place finish in the 200m after crossing at 25.21, while Mara Blanchard took fifth in the pole vault after clearing 3.50m (11' 5.75").
