EASTON, Pa. -
The Lafayette men's and women's track & field teams got the 2017 outdoor season started off on the right foot as they each took second at the 7-way meet hosted by the Leopards at the Metzgar Fields Complex.

The men totaled 237 points, being slightly edged by Lehigh's meet-best 254. Meanwhile, the women compiled a team score of 141, taking second behind Lehigh's 295.

Lafayette's men and women combined to win 12 events at their home opener.

Dave McGriff and Patrick Corcoran dominated the field events on the men's side. In their first taste of the hammer throw this outdoor season, they claimed the top two spots as Corcoran hit 175' 1", and McGriff reached 170' 11", both IC4A qualifiers. Dan Sweitzer also scored for the Maroon and White and set a new PR at 156' 3".

In his first outdoor meet since the NCAA Regionals, McGriff (162' 7") took the top spot in the discus, while Corcoran (134' 0") hit the second furthest distance of the day. Cocoran would also go on to place third in the shot put with a distance of 47' 1/4".

Lafayette's success continued in the field events as the men and women swept the board in the pole vault once Michael Thorne (14' 5 1/4") and Mara Blanchard (11' 1 3/4") each cleared the best height to take first place. Blanchard had a successful busy day at the meet as the senior also took first in the 100m at 13.10 and was a key piece in the women's 4x100m relay that placed second.

The high jump heavily favored the Leopards as Matt Beck took first at 6' 1 2/4", while Tyler Hubeny and Brendan Doyle each cleared the same height and grabbed second and third, respectively. Hubeny would later go on to take first in the 110m hurdles at 15.79.

Out of the seven competing jumpers in the long jump, Steven Young had the best jump of the day at 22' 4 1/2" and was the only competitor to eclipse the 22' mark.

In the men's 4x100m relay, the group of Marcus Vilme, Dan Hogan, Jake Hubertus and Justin Johnson tied for the best time at the meet with Lehigh at 43.01. Despite it being just his first outdoor season for the Leopards, Johnson was electric on the track and placed second in the 100m (11.55) and in the 200m (23.50), while also contributing as the second leg of the 4x400m relay.

For the women, Drew Davis, Crosby Spiess, Blanchard and Natasha Otton finished second in the 4x100 with their time of 49.61.

When it came time for the distance runners to take the track, the Leopards showcased their talents and took the top four spots in the 1500m led by Alexa Kwapinski's time of 4:48.52. Emily Moore (4:49.95), Caroline Harmon (4:55.15) and Brigid McGill (4:55.27) were the next three runners to cross and score for the Maroon and White.

In the 800m, Kelly Reager was the top finisher out of 11 total runners after hitting her time of 2:17.38.

The Leopards closed out the meet with a first-place showing in the 4x400m relay once the group of Hubertus, Johnson, Tom Strand and Dan Hogan crossed at 3:27.28.
