Leopards Drop Game One of Sunday Doubleheader

Feb. 18, 2018

Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Lafayette baseball team struck first in the first game of their doubleheader on Sunday morning, but the Leopards couldn't hold onto their slim lead, dropping the contest by a final score of 2-1.

The Maroon and White received another strong performance from their starting pitcher, as John Cain pitched 4.2 scoreless innings. The Leopards offense found greater success this afternoon, outhitting Davidson 10-6, but Lafayette couldn't capitalize with men on base, leaving 10 runners stranded over nine innings.

The Leopards had a chance in the third inning as Brandon Posivak rocketed a one-out double down the right field line. A sac fly from Steven Cohen moved Posivak to third, but the Maroon and White couldn't move him home, as the score stayed at 0-0.

After John Cain got the first two outs in the bottom of the fifth, freshman Michael Dunn came on in relief with runners on first and second. Dunn did his job, forcing Davidson to fly out to left field to end the inning.

The Leopards got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning after a two-out rally. Richard Villa singled to right and moved two third after a Patrick Nelson single. Quentin Bubb brought Villa home with another single, giving the Leopards a 1-0 advantage.

Davidson responded in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch from Brian Lannino. The sophomore recovered from the hiccup to strike out the very next batter to bring the inning to a close.

Lafayette had another two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn't capitalize with the bases loaded. Luke Robinson got things started with a walk, and was joined on base by Dan Leckie and Spencer Rouse. Mark Glover came on to pinch hit for Villa, but couldn't bring a run home, grounding out to end the inning.

Lannino worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh, but wasn;t able to keep the Wildcats off the board in the eighth, as Davidson took advantage of a two-out walk. Two straight singles from the Wildcats put them up for good at 2-1.

Lannino was credited with the loss, striking out three in 2.2 innings of work with two earned runs. Villa led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Austin Leonard earned the win on the mound for the Wildcats.

The second game of Lafayette's doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:20 p.m. start.
