EASTON, Pa. ÃÆ'Æ’¢ÃÆ'¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡¬ÃÆ'¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…â€Å" The Lafayette women's lacrosse team couldn't find enough offensively and defensively to contend with No. 11 Navy on Senior Day at Fisher Stadium on Saturday afternoon, falling by a 19-9 score in the team's final home game of 2018.
Prior to the contest, the Leopards' five-member senior class of Erika Mazer, Emma Hardy, Anna Raymond, Kristin Schaen and Dana Smith were honored for their contributions to the program over their four years on College Hill. The loss drops Lafayette to 4-11 on the season overall and 1-5 in Patriot League play, while Navy improves to 13-3 on the year and 7-1 in conference action.
Hardy made the most of her senior-day opportunity, leading the team in scoring with her first three career goals for the Maroon and White. Raymond also stopped four shots between the pipes to move to 300 total saves for her career.
"It just felt like normal practice with everyone. Obviously it's a great feeling, but it just felt so natural," Hardy said. "Everybody was supporting each other and it wasn't just me getting the goals. Everyone played a part in it."
Juniors Emma Novick and Hannah Davey were the other multi-goal scorers for Lafayette with a pair apiece, while classmate Jane Kirby and Schaen also added a goal each. For Navy, Jenna Collins led all scorers with six goals on the day and Kelly Larkin was outstanding with a 10-point outing of five goals and five assits.
Navy started strong with the game's first three goals in just over two minutes before Novick got Lafayette on the board at the 26:14 mark, trailing, 3-1. The Mids moved their lead out to as high as six before back-to-back markers from Hardy and Novick brought the Leopards back within four at 9-5 with 6:17 to play.
That four-goal margin was the closes the Leopards would get as Navy poured on the scoring through the halftime break. A pair from Hardy late in the second half was all that could lift the bench in the final moments of a 19-9 defeat.
The Mids led in shots, 39-19, ground balls, 18-11 and draw controls, 16-13. Lafayette committed 16 turnovers on the day and forced 10 from the visitors.
Lafayette closes its season with two more Patriot League tilts on the road, traveling to American on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and Colgate on Saturday, also at 1 p.m.
