EWING, N.J. - The Lafayette Men's Fencing team tuned up for the MACFA Championships with a successful Saturday round-robin event hosted by The College of New Jersey.
The Leopards emerged with a 3-2 record on the day with wins over Rowan (20-7), Rutgers (22-5) and the host Lions (23-3). Head coach Gregory Rupp's squad also had impressive performances in narrow losses to Cornell (14-13) and Drew (16-11).
Individually, sophomore
Yiwen Cui ran the table with a 15-0 record in foil. Overall, the Foil unit all emerged with winning records as
Bora Mutis went 14-1 and William McAlpine 8-7. Lafayette only had a pair compete in Sabre but that duo dominated as
Patrick Rekieta matched Mutis at 14-1 and was followed closely by
Ian Miller at 12-3. Rounding out the performance in Epee were
Jonathan Rosenblum at 11-5,
Grahame Ung at 9-6 and
Sean FitzGibbon at 7-8.
Next up for the Lafayette men is the penultimate competition of the season on March 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association Championship hosted by Drew University in the Rangers' Simon Forum. Â
The season will conclude the following weekend with the NCAA Regionals hosted by Duke University and the NCAA Championships March 19-22, 2019 in Detroit, for those who qualify.
