Halloween Weekend Trip Takes Leopards to D.C.

Lafayette vs. Georgetown game notes

The Match-Up: The Leopards emerge from their bye week with a trip to D.C. to face Georgetown on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. It's the second straight trip for the Leopards to our nation's capital, with the last meeting coming in 2019. (Georgetown did not participate in the 2020 season, which was played in the 2021 spring).

Down the Stretch: It is Patriot League play the rest of the way for Lafayette. Holy Cross, Colgate and Lehigh await the Leopards in the final three weeks. With a win over Bucknell (27-0) and a loss to Fordham (42-41), Lafayette is still in the Patriot League title hunt, but there isn't much margin for error, as the PL champion typically has no more than one loss in the seven-team field.

Rested! ... And...Ready?: During the John Garrett era, Lafayette is 1-2 coming out of the bye week, going 1-1 vs. Georgetown and 0-1 vs. Princeton.

Olivas Putting Up Big Numbers: With the absence of Major Jordan, junior LB Marco Olivas has raised his level of play. Olivas, who is easy to spot on the field flying to the ball with his long hair flowing out of his helmet, has 31 tackles in the Leopards' last two games. Against Bucknell, the Integrative Engineering major led the defense with 16 tackles and helped limit Bucknell to 89 rushing yards. Olivas brought home Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week laurels for his play. At No. 19 Harvard he followed with 15 stops and two tackles for loss. He leads the team with 77 tackles on the season, good enough for third in the Patriot League.

The Shutout: Lafayette's 27-0 shutout of Bucknell in the 99th series meeting was the first for the Leopards since Nov. 4, 2017 when they registered a 7-0 win at Georgetown.

A Fresh Leg: Freshman PK Micah Pettit has been a sound addition to the special teams units. Pettit connected for a career-long 49-yard field goal vs. Bucknell and also added a 45-yarder. The 49-yard kick is tied for the fourth longest in school history and is the longest since 2010. When Pettit booted a 47-yarder at William and Mary, it was the longest make since 2011. The Utah native is 4-for-4 on kicks of 40 to 49 yards and 7-of-9 overall on the season to go along with 14-of-14 makes on PAT. Pettit, who was named the Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 11, added a 33-yarder at Harvard.

Don't @ Me: Lafayette is in the midst of a three-game road swing, its first span of that length since 2016. Earlier in the season, the Leopards played four straight at home for the first time since 2011.

Rivalry 157: In a recent development, Lehigh has moved the kick-off time for Rivalry 157 on Nov. 20 in Bethlehem, Pa. to noon.

Run The Ball...: Lafayette rushed for a season-high 215 yards against Bucknell with senior Selwyn Simpson and freshman Michael Hayes each accounting for 74 yards and a touchdown. Junior WR Joe Gillette contributed 50 yards and his own rushing TD (to go along with three catches for 72 yards).

Turnover Tales: Lafayette had not turned over the ball in three straight outings before handing it over four times at No. 19 Harvard. For the season, Lafayette is minus-four in turnovers and 0-4 when committing more turnvers than its opponent.

Freshman Factor: Freshman QB Ah-Shaun Davis has been a major factor for the Leopards. Davis, the Patriot League Rookie of the Week twice this season, has started the last five games, completing 78-of-124 (63%) with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Against Bucknell, Davis was 11-for-18 for 122 yards. The week prior he registered a 20-of-28, 354-yard, two-touchdown passing performance vs. Fordham when he went toe to toe with the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. Davis did not throw an INT and also ran in a TD in the Leopards' first 300-yard passing game since 2019, earning Rookie of the Week honors.
In his collegiate debut vs. No. 23 New Hampshire on Sept. 18, he was 16-of-23 for 192 yards with a pick while completing passes to five targets. Against Penn, Davis completed 12-of-18 for 157 yards and a TD and his second ROW honor.

Big Plays For 14: Of the Leopards' 23 plays of 20 yards or more in 2021 Ah-Shaun Davis has been involved in 13 of them, including the season-long play from scrimmage, a 74-yard TD toss to K.J. Rodgers vs. Fordham. The week prior vs. Penn, Davis heaved a 70-yard bomb to Joe Gillette

Take Your Pick: Senior LB Billy Shaeffer picked off a pair of passes vs. Penn. His 41-yard interception return for touchdown at the end of the third quarter ran the final to 24-14. Shaeffer finished with a team-high eight tackles and a half tackle for loss on his way to Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week (9/27) honors.
Freshman Saiku White also picked off a pass with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter that he returned 32 yards and helped the defense keep Penn scoreless for the final seven minutes of the third and all of the fourth quarter.
At Harvard Shaeffer was at it again, as he and Preston Forney both recorded interceptions.

Opponent: Georgetown comes into Saturday's game with a 2-4 overall mark and a 1-2 clip in conference action. The Hoyas are coming off a 29-21 win at Bucknell in week six following losses to Colgate (28-21) and Holy Cross (48-14).
Junior Pierce Holly is the starter at QB, completing 74-of-123 with two TDs and four INTs in 2021. He was 18-of-31 at Bucknell when the Hoyas controlled the game with 225 rushing yards. Herman Moultrie and Joshua Stakely had 84 and 76 rushing yards, respectively, with Holley adding 16 rushing yards and a running TD. The Hoyas have an offensive line that averages 313 pounds.
In the air, Cameron Crayton, Joshua Tomas and Asante Das have combined for 75 of the team's 122 receptions and three of the team's five receiving touchdowns.
Defensively, Georgetown has allowed 204 rushing yards and 173 passing yards per game. Senior LB Justin Fonteneaux and graduate student DB Ahmad Wilson lead the team in tackles, with 53 and 46 stops, respectively.
Georgetown is coached by Rob Sgarlata who is in his seventh season as the head coach.
