EASTON, Pa. -- Senior linebacker
Billy Shaeffer and freshman quarterback
Ah-Shaun Davis have been selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, following the Leopards' 24-14 win over Penn on Sept. 25.
Â
Shaeffer picked off two passes and ran one back for a game-clinching 41-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. He also made a game-high eight tackles and added a tackle for loss as the Leopard defense stifled the Penn running game, holding the Quakers to 11 rushing yards.
Â
In his second consecutive start, Davis completed 12-of-18 for 157 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. His performance-defining play came 16 seconds after Penn took the lead in the third quarter. Davis eluded a blitz and found junior wide receiver
Joe Gillette for a 70-yard touchdown pass. The scoring play, which is the Leopards' longest from scrimmage in 2021, gave Lafayette the lead for good in the program's first win of the year.
Â
Monday's selections marked the first weekly awards for Shaeffer, who was an All-Patriot League Second-Team selection in 2019, and Davis and the first for Lafayette in the 2021 fall season.
Â
Lafayette continues its four-game home stand at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when it opens Patriot League play against Fordham.
