HELLERTOWN, Pa. -- The Lafayette golf team finished second in the ABARTA Collegiate Invitational following the final round of the annual tournament on Monday at Steel Club. The team title in the two-day event was decided by a sudden-death playoff between Lafayette and Iona.
Iona captured the first hole of the playoff to take home team title honors, shooting a four-over-par 580 (292, 288). Iona's Justin Burkhamer was the medalist, carding two rounds of 69 on the par-72 course.
As a team, Lafayette also shot a four-over-par 580 (297, 283). Its final round total of 283 was the lowest team score of the event as the Leopards climbed from fourth into a tie for first place and the playoff.
The second place Lafayette group was headed by seniors
Ryan Tall and
Kazuki Osawa, who both ended the tournament with a two-under total score of 142 (72, 70). Junior
Martin Vanhaelst finished tied for 16th with a score of 147 (76, 71) and freshman
Raymond Dennehy placed 44th with a six-over score of 150 (78, 72). The final member of the first group was sophomore
Michael Walsh, who tied for 52nd with a score of 151 (77, 74).
Group B for the Leopards ended the day tied for 16th with a 35-over score of 611 (307, 304). Freshman
Sean Saw,
Quint Dingledine, and
Michael Bell led the group with Saw finishing tied for 31st (73, 75), Dingledine tied for 64th (81, 72) and Bell tied for 72nd (75, 79). Senior
T.J. Repczynski shot rounds of 78 and classmate
Drew Steiner shot 84-81.
The Leopards' next match will be the Wildcat Spring Invitational hosted by Villanova University on April 18-19 at the Radnor Valley Country Club in Villanova, Pa.
