STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Leopard track and field team opened 2024 by competing in the Spartan Invite on Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
For the men, sophomore Titan Casey snagged a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with a final time of 1:56.92. Classmate Quinn Worrell ran a 2:27.87 for a second-place finish in the 1,000-meter run, securing an All-Time performance while junior A.J. Sanford placed third in the 3,000-meter run (8:34.31).
In the sprints, freshman Alexander Caba ran a 22.4 in the 200-meter dash, gathering a third-place finish. In the jumps, sophomore Benjamin Hill and junior Jack Lynett each vaulted 14' 2" to reel in second- and third-place finishes in the pole vault.Â
In the throws, senior Andrew Bowsher took home fifth place in the weight throw (52' 6").
In the relay events, Casey, junior C.J. Romine, Worrell and Sanford placed third in the 4,000-meter relay with a final time of 10:25.11.
On the women's side, junior Nava Chevan ran a 2:17.30 in the 800-meter run to capture a first-place finish. Senior Juliette Delmotte and junior Julia Greeley managed first-place finishes in the triple jump (39' 2.5") and pole vault (12' 3.75"), respectively. Both individuals recorded personal bests as well as improving upon the #2 All-Time Ranks and having ECAC Championship qualifying finishes. Right behind Greeley, sophomore Isabella Allen vaulted 10'6" for a third-place finish in the pole vault.
In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Angel Awono placed fourth (9.18) while sophomores Elizabeth Borah and Elena Malone each collected fourth-place finishes in the 1-mile run (5:11.24) and 400-meter dash (59.83), respectively. In the 800, junior Chelsey Cochrane ran a 2:21.91 for third place.Â
In the 60-meter dash, freshman Ida Moczerniuk finished fifth securing an All-Time performance with a final time of 7.86.
The relay team of senior Lily Dineen, Chevan, sophomore Alexa LaSasso, and Borah placed third with a final time of 12:31.08 in the 4000-meter distance relay.Â
"It was a great January start to the indoor season after being away for 3 plus weeks," said Lafayette head coach Michele Curcio. "Our performances far exceeded last year's Spartan Invite with many personal bests. We look forward to continuing improvements over the next few weeks as we settle into our practice week."
The Maroon and White are next in action on Jan. 19 at the Gotham Cup.
