Hamden, Conn. - A pair of goals from Amanda Magadan helped push the Leopards past No. 13 Boston College, 4-2, in Lafayette's season opener on Saturday afternoon. Kelsey Mead also tallied a goal and two assists in the game.
Lafayette got on the board early as Magadan knocked her first goal of the season past the Boston College goalie just five and a half minutes into the game. The Eagles answered four minutes later on a goal from Kelcie Hromisin.
It didn't take long for a response from the Leopards as Magadan took a feed from Ellen Colbourne and fired the ball into the cage at the 11:29 mark. Lafayette threatened with three penalty corners in the final twenty minutes of the half, but Boston College was able to keep the Leopards out, as the Maroon and White held a 2-1 advantage at the break.
The Leopards struck early again in the second half off a penalty corner. Mead sent the corner to Kirby Szalkowski who stopped it for Jenna Seybert to fire home two minutes into the frame to push the lead to 3-1. The lead increased to 4-1 ten minutes later when Mead followed up a shot from Magadan for her first mark of the season.
Boston College threatened with 20 minutes to play, but a great defensive effort by Hannah Millen kept the lead at three. Five minutes later, the Eagles broke through to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. Another defensive save by the Leopards, this time from Aliza Furneaux, with ten minutes to play helped Lafayette maintain its two-goal advantage and defeat the Eagles, 4-2.
Jessica Deutsch picked up the win for the Leopards making five saves, while Leah Settipane made four saves for the Eagles in the loss. Boston College held an advantage in shots and penalty corners, but Lafayette took advantage of its opportunities on the afternoon and came away with the victory.
The Leopards are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
