EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette field hockey team dropped a non-conference game to James Madison 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Rappolt Field.

"I don't think we were as sharp as we needed to be in the last five to 10 minutes of the game and that's a piece we continue to work on," Lafayette head field hockey coach Jennifer Stone said. "We played a great JMU team and it was a great test for us. That match will definitely help us in the future."

The Dukes (11-3) began the afternoon by applying a heavy dose of pressure and within the first three minutes of action, they had already taken three shots.

In the seventh minute, the Leopards (7-7) had possession of the ball and worked their way into the Dukes' circle. Amanda Magadan had the ball and dished it over to Aliza Furneaux, who got a quality shot off, but it was saved.

Over the course of the next 17 minutes of play, the Dukes placed five shots on goal, only to see all five sent away by Katelyn Arnold. One of the shots for James Madison came on a fast break opportunity. The Dukes had a two-on-one advantage and as the shot was fired, Arnold sprinted out of the cage, slid and sent the ball away.

James Madison was eventually able to sneak one past Arnold though in the 24th minute when Hannah Hall deflected a ball into the cage off of a pass from McKenzie Ridgely.

The Leopards and Dukes each took one more shot in the half with both of them getting blocked.

After a few minutes passed in the second stanza, the Leopards earned a penalty corner. Lisa van der Geest got her stick on the ball and sent it over to Magadan, who reared back and rifled a shot into the back of the cage to even up the score at 1-1.

The Leopards looked to take the lead and put a pair of shots on goal, but both were saved by the Dukes' goalkeeper, Sara Kraeutler.

The score remained even until the 56th minute when Hall sent a ball towards the Leopards' cage from the left edge of the circle and it was deflected in by Ashley Gippe to put James Madison up 2-1.

The Dukes added one final goal in the contest in the 63rd minute off of a shot from Miranda Rigg and James Madison went on to grab the 3-1 win.

The Leopards will head to Lewisburg, Pa. for their next game against Bucknell in a Patriot League contest on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 11 a.m.
