Final Stats

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite grabbing an early lead, the Lafayette field hockey team was defeated 4-1 after Hofstra scored four unanswered goals on a rainy Monday afternoon.

Hofstra held the edge in shots, 18-10 and corners, 8-2. Seven of the 10 shots by the Leopards were on goal, while 12 of Hofstra's 18 were of the same variety.

In the fifth minute, the Leopards were awarded a penalty corner. Ellen Colbourne inserted the ball to the edge of the circle, where Lisa van der Geest and Meg Lillis got a touch on it before senior Amanda Magadan deflected it into the back of the cage to give Lafayette the early 1-0 advantage.

Less than 30 seconds later, the Pride looked to answer and Claudie Marin Samper found space and fired a shot at the Leopards' cage, but Katelyn Arnold sent it away for her first save of the afternoon. Arnold concluded the game with six saves.

In the 24th minute, Hofstra capitalized on a penalty corner after Marin Samper and Marloes Schavemaker combined to find Stella Schoen for the score. The Pride tried extending its lead in the 30th minute, however, the Schoen shot was denied by Cody Hunsicker.

Entering the second stanza, the score remained tied, but Hofstra was relentless, taking three shots within the first three minutes of action. The first was blocked and the second was saved by Arnold.

A couple of minutes later, the third shot came from the Pride and it was sent away by Aliza Furneaux, marking the Leopards' second defensive save of the game. However, the ball trickled back into the circle and Lara Bittel punched it in to give Hofstra its first lead of the game.

Trailing by a single score, the Leopards got a shot off in the 45th minute when Ami Turner took aim and fired, but it was saved by Taylor Mumley, a Hofstra forward who was near the cage.

Another scoring opportunity came for Lafayette two minutes later off of a penalty corner. The ball was inserted by Kristen Taylor to van der Geest and she sent the ball towards the Hofstra cage. This time, it was the Hofstra goalkeeper, Lauren Saltus, who recorded the save.

Hofstra added to its lead in the 53rd minute once Schoen found the back of the cage to put the Pride up 3-1. Immediately once the Leopards got the ball back, they went to attack the Pride's cage. Magadan placed a shot on goal, but it ricocheted off of the post.

The Leopards had three more shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of play, but Saltus denied them all.

The Pride added one final score in the 66th minute and went on to claim the 4-1 victory over the Leopards.

Lafayette will return to the field on Friday to open up Patriot League play against Boston U. at 7 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
