EDITOR'S NOTE: In just two full seasons on College Hill, junior power forward Mike Farrell has turned in himself into the Leopards' most consistent player. Farrell, an American Studies major, has agreed to provide www.goleopards.com with a weekly journal entry, talking about his life as a student-athlete. Farrell came to Lafayette from DeLand, Fla. where he attended Father Lopez High School. He is the first non-senior team captain since 1997-98.Â
Well Christmas has come and gone, and a new year is about to begin. Over the holidays I had a chance to get back to sunny DeLand Florida and see my family and friends. I had no trouble with the flights coming down, and was happy when the plane landed in Daytona Beach. At home my family had set up an outside dinner party with all my old friends from grade school and high school, from church, and from the neighborhood. We had a feast, and let me just say that eating home cooked food again was about the best feeling in the world.
People came from all over. Allie McCabe, who coincidentally goes to Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia - and will hopefully make it up to a couple of games this season, was the first one to see me, as she picked me up at the airport. She had just finished up a semester abroad, and it was great to see her again. Josh Cemelich, my point guard in high school made the trip to DeLand that night from Tigerville, South Carolina. I think he did something with his hair, but I wasn't sure - it just looked a little longer (and it will look better when you cut it, trust me I know from experience).

Paul Eckert, a Navy boy, but we won't hold that against him, was also able to come down for the break. He might be the only person in uniform cheering for us when we play at Navy, so it is always good to see him. And the surprise of the evening went to Beau Pillot. I have been going to school with Beau since the third grade, but I haven't seen him in about a year because he is on duty with the United States Marine Corps. He finally got some time off and was able to come back home.
The family was all healthy and looking great. My brother, Jeremy, is growing his hair out now, and I must say that it looks a lot better on him than it did on me my freshman year here (just take a look at last year's media guide). He is now healthy from a banged up toe, and was entering the championship game of a Christmas Tournament this evening. Good luck brother. Mom and dad Farrell were both looking good, and apparently thought that I could use some help getting to know the kitchen a little better. For the first time in history, I had to step it up on Christmas Day and make the family dinner, which they were all gracious enough to compliment me on - and I might just add that my cooking was superb.
So here is to a great new year. Wishing you all the best.
Peace
