EDITOR'S NOTE: Senior power forward Mike Farrell is in his final season on College Hill and his second full season as the men's basketball team captain and author of weekly web journal entries on www.goleopards.com. Each week, the American Studies major and Florida native will detail his life as a student-athlete.
I'm sorry, it has been a while since I've been able to sit down and collect my thoughts. There has been a lot to catch up on in life. I hope that everyone had a great holiday season. As I predicted, the men on the team did a great job with finals, then we did a job coming back to win the game at Princeton before we all went home for a few days.
The Princeton win was especially nice because I had not beaten them since my freshman year - the first collegiate game that my mom got to see me play in - but I was a tad under the weather and did not see much court time. My sophomore year, we lost a close one at Jadwin Gym, and last year was just not our year. But it was also Big Jamie Hughes birthday on the 22nd of December, and it was good to get him a birthday W. Which it seems that this year's squad is pretty good at doing. While we beat Princeton on the 22nd for Mr. Hughes's 22nd birthday, we also got Pat Betley a win on his coming of age day. The 20th of December was Pat's 20th birthday and we came back from an early deficit to chalk up our seventh straight win in the young season over Cornell. So "happy birthday" boys - I'm beginning to wish that we would have a birthday every game day.

Needless to say there was not much sleeping going on the night of the 22nd. Most of us had flights or drives to home the next day. My interim roommate, Andrei Capusan, was kind enough to stay up with Rob Dill and I and give us an extraordinarily early ride to the Lehigh Valley Airport the next morning. We left campus at 4 in the morning, and got a little something to eat as we waited for our departure times. Dilly (who, by the way, had way more than 6 blocks in last night's game against Columbia despite what the stat sheet says. The man had five blocks at half-time, and I know that I saw at least three in the second half, but I digress) was going to the heartland of America to spend some time with his special lady friend and her family for the holidays, and his flight left at the ungodly hour of 5:30 am. My flight was scheduled (and surprising left on time) an hour later.
It was great to get back home. The whole family was there, including my grandparents. I don't think that I will ever eat as much food in such a small period of time again. Fact. I was a workhorse at the table, putting anything that was edible into my stomach. I also got to catch up with my DeLand people, and even a couple of outsiders who really want to be a part of the DeLand Crew.
It was a short stay though, and I soon found myself back at Daytona Beach International Airport flying back up to Easton. Then I had an even shorter turnaround for our trip out to California -- which besides the basketball was a lovely trip. The weather was spectacular. I don't think we could have asked for better, unfortunately there were no sunny skies basketball-wise. So enough about that. The New Year has begun and there is no reason to dwell on what happened in the past (but wait, isn't that what I have been doing for the length of this journal?). I guess all that is left to be said is Happy New Year from the Lafayette Leopards to you. May 2004 bring you health and happiness, and a boatload of wins.
See you all at the Palestra.
