BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lafayette track and field enjoyed a strong weekend of performances at the Covert Classic hosted by Lehigh on Friday and Saturday, collecting several top-five finishes and seven event wins.
In the field for the men, sophomore Ivan Tejada captured the victory in the hammer throw with a 169' 11" effort. Sophomore Jared Googel and freshman Javin Petry secured second (168' 6") and third (166' 7") in the hammer throw, respectively. Tejada also earned fourth in shot put, putting 49' 0.25". Junior Robert McClosky finished third in the javelin with a 187' 1.25" throw.
Junior Benjamin Hill reeled in first in the pole vault, vaulting 15' 5.75" followed by sophomore Elliott Godin in second (14' 6"). Freshman J.T. Cook leaped 21' 2.75" in the long jump for second place. Senior Quinn Curtin and sophomore Andrew Harrison took home second (44' 8.75") and fourth (43' 3.25") in the triple jump.
On the women's side, senior Erin O'Leary snagged the victory in the hammer throw, throwing 174' 5". In the javelin, sophomore Marin Rosser enjoyed the first-place finish (123' 9") while senior Rylee Bordwick and sophomore Maddie Still followed close behind in third (114' 8") and fourth (112' 7"), respectively. Freshman Kristin DeBolt threw 133' 5" in the discus throw for fourth.
Sophomore Bridget O'Mara vaulted 11' 3.75" in the pole vault to finish fifth.
In the sprints for the men, sophomore Dexter DeMarco took home the victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a final time of 59.17. Freshman Kaseme Leckie finished in 10.92 in the 100 meters for third while junior Zachary Barban placed fourth in the 400 meters (50.37).
For the women, sophomore Abbey Nichols earned No. 10 all-time at Lafayette with her time of 1:04.91 in the 400-meter hurdles. Nichols claimed fifth place. Freshman Lilly Bradfield managed fifth in the 400 meters (1:01.19). Senior Angel Awono and freshman Iyun Franklin-Ayeni achieved third (15.54) and fifth (15.70) in the 100-meter hurdles, respectively. Sophomore Gabby Buber finished fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.49.
In the middle distance events, junior Quinn Worrell reeled in first in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:52.58. Freshman Cole Scattergood ran 9:58.37 in the 3000-meter steeplechase for fifth.
For the women, sophomore Ava Severino claimed the win in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a final time of 11:19.77. Junior Carolina McCloskey secured No. 9 all-time in the 3000-meter steeplechase with her time of 11:34.11, achieving third place. Senior Casey MacElhiney garnered third in the 1500 meters (4:44.64) and junior Elena Malone ended in fourth in the 800 meters (2:17.81).
The Leopards' long distance runners took up the majority of the top five in the 5000 meters for both the men's and women's races. Freshman David Whitford secured second with a time of 16:19.08 followed by junior Francis Dougherty and freshman Colin Strachman in fourth (16:39.47) and fifth (16:55.59).
In the women's race, sophomore Bridget Shaver snagged second with a time of 18:56.79. Junior Kira Marr and freshman Anya Kazemi crossed the finish line right behind in third (19:05.38) and fourth (19:08.00), respectively.
Next up for the Maroon and White are the Patriot League Championships hosted by Holy Cross on May 2-3.
