John Sutherland served Lafayette College as head football coach from 1919 through 1923, compiling a 33-8-2 record which included winning records in all five years and an undefeated season in 1921. Sutherland's 1921 team pounded its opponents on the scoreboard 274-26 and counted a well-respected University of Pittsburgh eleven among its conquered. That game, more than any other in his tenure, must have been special. Pittsburgh was Sutherland's alma mater. He was graduated with a degree in dentistry, but his love for football kept him away from establishing a dental practice.Following his years in Easton, which included five victories over rival Lehigh, Sutherland returned to his alma mater where he became one of the most well- known and innovative coaches in the country. His success earned him a rightful place in the football Hall of Fame.
